Comedian Chaunté Wayans Is More Than Her Last Proper name
Wayans spoke to ESSENCE almost carving her own career in comedy every bit an openly gay Black woman and without the help of her terminal proper noun.

Wayans has spent years forging her ain path, something others with a famous concluding name might not do. The comic refuses to ride the coattails of her family members—her uncles are Marlon, Keenan, Shawn, Damon and Dwayne—and says that seeing the way famous members of her family unit were treated in and outside of Hollywood has made her wary of fame.
"When I was growing up I didn't similar the game. I didn't like the entertainment industry. I saw how people were treating my family, meaning when things were at a high point, everybody beloved them. Yous don't really accept placidity time and all this stuff. I didn't really like the manufacture."
She adds that doing it on her own has allowed her to try new things.
"One affair my family taught me was don't be afraid to offset something new or take risks. Go hard and merely be truthful to what you're saying. I'chiliad able to test things and speak without people putting me down."

Notwithstanding, one reason Wayans may not be every bit well known even so is her unwillingness to accommodate. As an openly gay adult female, she's faced criticism from people in the industry for not fitting into a stereotypical thought of femininity.
"It'due south been a tough road," she said. "I had an agent who wanted me to apparel more girly. The energy in clubs has been, 'Oh you lot're really cool,' only they won't book me again. Yet, somehow, Wayans turns these experiences into material for her acts.
